Content Management

Our experience has shown that clients now want to develop the sophistication of their web initiatives by including content management and knowledge management.

This move is typified by the question:

"How do you build an intelligent portal?"

The first step is to utilise some form of Content Management. This includes tools and procedures to ensure that the data being submitted to a corporate intranet or web site is consistent, formatted according to corporate style guidelines and available.

Users will return to your (commercial) site if it is interesting and accessible (this is called 'stickiness' in web marketing parlance).

At Korscient, we understand the effort required to maintain a web site once it has been deployed.

We differentiate between the components that allow us to develop a content management system (Architecture) and the Tools to maintain, update and monitor your site.

Administration tools allow you to perform mundane tasks from starting / stopping your site to allowing access to specific areas of your site for priviledged users. Advertisements are not only things to tempt you to buy on the web. The same technique can also be used to deliver rolling news ‘tickers’ on your corporate intranet. Advertisement management components are also able to contribute data to the template manager. Architecture incorporates the components that are used to develop your site and organise the data automatically. Categorisation of the data helps the template manager position it appropriately as well as increasing the quality of the search results. Data can come from the file system, databases, workflow systems, email and the web. It can include multimedia data such as video and audio. Keeping the same set of development tools post implementation means that you can change your site in the future. Performance and monitoring tools help you understand how well your site is performing. If your site is popular you may need to buy a bigger server to cope with the number of users. These tools also tell you which are the most popular sections of your site. Users appreciate the ability to change the appearance and content of a site to suit their own preferences. All sites need a presentation mechanism (from a simple browser to multi-media ‘plug-ins’ like Flash) to show off the content to the best effect. Review tools helps you locate things that are ‘broken’ on your site e.g. links to resources that no longer exist. Updates to the site can be automatically released at a specific time or certain ‘real-time’ data can be delayed. The template manager determines which elements are placed where on the site. This ensures that corporate style guidelines are followed. Most sites need post implementation maintenance. An approriate set of tools makes this ‘tweaking’ process significantly easier. Tracking tells you who is coming to your site and where do they go when they leave. For commercial (eCommerce) sites this layer will include links to secure merchant transaction systems. This would allow you to see different versions of the pages on your site. It can also allow you to present different company logos depending from which country the users are accessing your site. More sophisticated sites contain applications that require workflow elements. In a bank this could include requiring authorisation from the Compliance Department before content may be published or issuing warning messages if expected regular content is late.
